Lecture: “How is it like to be an LGBTI+ in Turkey?” with Emirhan Deniz Çelebi
The focus of this lecture will be on LGBTI+ rights advocacy and/or service provision for women and LGBTI+ populations pre-Covid-19 & during the pandemic in different contexts in Turkey, and the implications on related issues, including: shrinking space in civil society, the precarity of human rights for the LGBTI+ community in Turkey, the line between solidarity and contestations. Overall, you will be hearing the story of a trans activist resisting in Turkey despite all these happening.
Speaker Bio:
As of March 14, 2022, Emirhan Deniz Çelebi started working at Unilever Turkey as the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Lead. Before Unilever, he was working as the Education Coordinator at Sabanci University since 2018, designing trainings such as Inclusive Leadership, Unconscious Bias, Inclusive Corporate Culture, Being LGBTI+ in Business Life for the corporate world. Between 2018 and 2022, he carried out various awareness activities, manifesto writing workshops, inclusive language guide projects with more than fifty companies in national and international context. He had a master’s degree in Sociology and Communication and a bachelor’s degree in English Language Teaching. He is currently a Ph.D. student in Adult Education at Boğaziçi University. Diversity and inclusion in work life, transformative learning in the workplace and awareness of gender diversity are among the topics that make his heart beat.
